The Small but Mighty “Tag” in SAP SuccessFactors Talent Intelligence Hub (TIH)

When designing SAP SuccessFactors Talent Intelligence Hub (TIH), it is easy to focus on the larger components: skills, competencies, proficiency levels, job roles, and Growth Portfolio integration and forget about the mighty “Tag”.

The Tag can seem like a minor configuration item—something to address after the “real” design work is complete. But that would be a mistake. Tags are one of the most important building blocks in an effective TIH solution. A thoughtful tagging strategy can determine whether your talent data is organized, searchable, secure, and scalable—or whether it becomes increasingly difficult to manage as the library grows.

    More Than Just a Label

At its simplest, a Tag is a keyword used to label and group attributes in Talent Intelligence Hub. SAP provides standard Tags such as Core, Critical, and Trending, while organizations can create custom Tags aligned with their own talent strategy.

Tags do far more than describe an attribute. Here are reasons why Tag configuration is so important in your implementation:

    1. Categorization and Governance

A TIH library may eventually contain thousands of skills, competencies, certifications, and other attributes. Tags provide an additional classification layer across that content.

For example, an organization might use Tags such as:

    • Leadership
    • Digital
    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Compliance
    • Customer-Facing
    • Future-Critical
    • Organization-Specific

This makes it easier to understand not only what an attribute is, but also why it matters to the organization. They may be functional (job-specific) or grouped together for other purposes.

Tags can also support governance processes. An attribute tagged as Regulatory, for example, may require a different review and approval process than one tagged as Emerging Skill.

    2. Filtering and User Experience

Tags help administrators and end users filter large attribute libraries and find relevant content more efficiently.

Without a consistent tagging strategy, users may be presented with an overwhelming number of attributes—many of which may have little relevance to their role, business area, or development goals. This is especially true in the Development Plan. Be sure to check out this SAP Help page which contains helpful snippets of XML code.

Well-designed Tags make the library more navigable. They can help users quickly narrow the available attributes when searching, maintaining job profiles, or selecting skills through the attribute picker.

In other words, Tags are not merely administrative metadata. They directly influence the usability of the solution.

    3. Permission Role Target Criteria

Perhaps the most important – and frequently overlooked – use of Tags is their relationship to attribute visibility.

SAP SuccessFactors allows organizations to configure Target Criteria for attribute types and Tags. This can help control which attributes are visible to different employee populations across Talent Intelligence Hub, Growth Portfolio, and other integrated experiences.

For example, Tags could help distinguish attributes intended for:

    • Executives and senior leaders
    • People managers
    • Technical employees
    • Sales organizations
    • Specific countries or business units
    • Employees in regulated positions

A Tag can therefore become part of the solution’s access and visibility model. Poorly designed Tags may expose irrelevant attributes to broad populations – or prevent employees from finding the attributes they actually need.

    Design the Tag Strategy Early

The most important lesson: Do not wait until the end of your TIH implementation to define Tags.

Before creating or importing a large attribute library, organizations should determine:

    • What business purpose will each Tag serve?
    • Which Tags will support filtering versus access and visibility?
    • Can an attribute have multiple Tags?
    • Who can create, assign, and maintain Tags?
    • How will Tags be governed as the library expands?
    • Which Tags should be visible to specific employee populations?

Tags should be included in the overall taxonomy and governance design – not treated as optional cleanup work.

    Small but Significant Impact

The Tag may be one of the smallest configuration objects in Talent Intelligence Hub, but its impact extends across categorization, search, filtering, governance, and attribute visibility.

A strong tagging strategy creates order and context within the talent library. A weak one can introduce confusion, inconsistent access, and significant remediation work later.

When it comes to Talent Intelligence Hub, the Tag is a perfect example of why the smallest design decisions can have some of the biggest consequences.
